What is PFA? Properties and applications of PFA

PFA is a relatively new type of fluoroplastic in China. Although its processing conditions are quite stringent, it boasts outstanding performance and is primarily used in the chemical industry—where high temperature resistance and superior corrosion resistance are essential—as well as in the fluoroplastic wire and cable sector. PFA, a type of Teflon fluoropolymer, is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoroalkoxy vinyl ether, also known as soluble polytetrafluoroethylene or perfluoroalkoxy resin. Now, let’s take a closer look at PFA’s properties and applications with DanKai Teflon Tube Lady: I. What is Teflon PFA? PFA resin is a relatively new fluoroplastic that can be melt-processed. Its melting point is approximately 580°F, and its density ranges from 2.13 to 2.16 g/cm³. PFA is similar to PTFE and FEP; however, above 302°F, its mechanical properties slightly outperform those of FEP, and it can operate at temperatures as high as 500°F. Its chemical resistance is comparable to that of PTFE. PFA is available in granular form for molding and extrusion, as well as in powder form for rotational molding and coatings; semi-finished products include films, sheets, rods, and tubes. On the U.S. market, PFA resins are marketed under brands such as DuPont’s Teflon, Daikin’s Neoflon, Ansimont’s Hthen, and Hoechst Celanese’s Hostafl. DanKai can customize these grades according to customer-specified material codes. The applications of PFA are similar to those of FEP. II. PFA Properties: 1. It is a copolymer of a small amount of perfluoropropyl perfluoroalkoxy vinyl ether and polytetrafluoroethylene. This enhances melt adhesion and reduces melt viscosity, while maintaining performance comparable to that of polytetrafluoroethylene. Such resin can be directly processed into finished products using conventional thermoplastic molding methods. 2. It has a long-term service temperature range of -80°C to 260°C, with exceptional chemical resistance—resistant to all chemicals—and the lowest coefficient of friction among plastics. It also exhibits excellent electrical properties, with insulation unaffected by temperature changes, earning it the nickname “King of Plastics.” It meets the V0 flame-retardant rating. 3. Its chemical resistance is similar to that of polytetrafluoroethylene but better than that of fluorinated ethylene propylene. 4. Its creep resistance and compressive strength both surpass those of polytetrafluoroethylene, with high tensile strength and an elongation at break of 100–300%. DanKai’s dielectric properties are excellent, and it demonstrates outstanding radiation resistance and strong flame retardancy. 5. Non-toxic: It is physiologically inert and can be implanted in the human body. III. PFA Applications: 1. Suitable for manufacturing corrosion-resistant parts, wear-reducing and friction-reducing components, seals, insulating parts, and medical device components. 2. High-temperature wire and cable insulation, anti-corrosion equipment, sealing materials, pump and valve liners, and chemical containers. Molding Performance: 1. It is a crystalline material with low hygroscopicity, making it amenable to standard thermoplastic processing methods for producing finished goods. 3. It has poor flowability and is highly prone to thermal degradation, releasing corrosive gases during decomposition. Therefore, molding temperatures should be strictly controlled below 475°C, molds should be preheated to 150–200°C, and the gating system should minimize flow resistance. 4. It is a semi-transparent granular material suitable for injection molding and extrusion. Molding temperatures should be between 350°C and 400°C; exceeding 475°C can easily lead to discoloration or bubble formation. Additionally, demolding may be more difficult. 5. Since the molten material is corrosive to metals, molds require chrome plating for long-term production. Although PFA, FEP, and PTFE share similar chemical properties, DanKai’s FEP can only be used below 200°C, while PTFE cannot be injection-molded.
